Chapter Six

Two days later, Lazlo tonelessly pointed out the deficits in the Boardwalk businesses to his non-biological father, noting the damage the unlawful employee had inflicted on their bottom line. The guy, a younger employee, had believed he deserved the store manager position over Manny and had retaliated by embezzling money for the last couple of months. Then, he’d lost his temper and tore apart a go kart.

Grateful to have figured out why their Boardwalk attractions had been showing losses, Lazlo assumed they would now perform as expected.

The older Steele, as Lazlo now labeled the man, scrolled through the documents in silence.

They hadn’t dealt with the fallout since the revelation, and Lazlo imagined his father would never discuss it if Lazlo went along with it. He wouldn’t. But, today wasn’t the day.

Lazlo hadn’t been able to reconcile the lies his parents had fed him. And his emotions were too volatile to force a conversation now. Still the questions remained: Who was his biological father? Why had his mother married this man and not his real dad? Were all his other siblings their children? How had the older Steele become Cedric’s biological parent when he hadn’t married that woman instead of Lazlo’s mother? Cedric had been pitted against Lazlo since they were kids. Why?

Most of all, how the hell was Lazlo supposed to feel? Betrayal had been his first reaction. Then, anger and hurt. Now, confusion muddled his brain until he couldn’t focus. Work had become a struggle. Each day, he felt more lost and alone than he had ever believed a person could be.

His mother hadn’t bothered to call. Not that Lazlo had thought she would. She’d never been a strong person, relying heavily on the older Steele to get her through life’s trials. Lazlo had come to resent her doing that. It was better she left him to his life. He couldn’t be civil, but he couldn’t bring himself to be disrespectful.

Despite everything, they were still his parents. He still loved them.

The tension in the office grew heavier, the weight of it forcing him to stay quiet.

“Summer’s coming,” the older Steele finally said in a toneless voice. “This better be back on track by then.”

Inwardly, Lazlo sighed. Had he expected anything different?

“I’m announcing the new CFO in June.” The older Steele stood to leave.

For the first time in his life, no emotion filtered into Lazlo’s heart or mind about the position he’d worked passionately toward since high school. Lazlo no longer cared. He didn’t even know if he was staying with Steele Enterprises.

Either way, the goal the older Steele had just set wasn’t realistic. “The businesses can’t turn around that quickly with the normal tourism numbers.

“That’s the expectation. Take it or leave it.” The older Steele shrugged before walking out.

Maybe it was time to hand the show over to Cedric. Lazlo could do it now. And, the power to do so was his if he wanted it. A part of him would love to stick it to the older Steele by quitting.
